Stan Lee's Marvel Comics creations have been a huge inspiration to the world of Experiential Marketing.We were profoundly saddened to hear about the passing of Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee. He was a pioneer in the world of comic books, and he created (and co-created) some of the most cherished heroic characters of all time, including Iron Man, Spider-Man, Black Panther, The X-Men, Thor, and The Incredible Hulk.

Lee’s creations have inspired the multi-billion dollar Marvel Cinematic Universe, along with the wildly successful X-Men series, Spider-Man series, and more. As these Stan Lee-born franchises have grown over the years, they have paved the way for some wonderfully innovative and entertaining experiential marketing activations, events, and stunts, including the following memorable examples:

  • X-Men TV series The Gifted – A San Diego Comic-Con activation wherein attendees could visit X-Gene Screening Stations to see if they are carriers of the mutant “X-Gene.”
  • Black Panther – A group of millennials in Chicago launched the Black Panther-inspired Wakandacon, described as “a three day celebration of Afro-futurism, tech, and pop culture.”
  • Spider-Man: Homecoming – A hilarious viral stunt wherein Spider-Man surprised guests at a NYC Starbucks as he dropped from the ceiling (using his web, of course) and picked up coffee drinks alongside unsuspecting patrons. (keep an eye out for Stan Lee in the accompanying viral video!)
